San Francisco's Anchor Brewing to Shut Down After 127 Years

Well, I'm not sure how to change the tradition of clam chowder in a bread bowl from Boudin accompanied by an Anchor Steam beer, but that is the bleak future as San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Company is ceasing operations after 127 years. One twitter user @Grant_Marek rode by their headquarters today and took a picture of the company's upside down banner-flag.

Anchor Brewing, the oldest craft brewery in the United States, has announced that it will cease operations and undergo liquidation. The San Francisco-based brewery, which was acquired by Sapporo for $85 million in 2017, cited challenging economic factors and declining sales since 2016 as the primary reasons for its closure. The company stated that the economic pressures had made the business unsustainable.

Anchor Brewing's workers were given a 60-day notice according to a company spokesperson and will receive transition support and separation packages in line with company practices. While production has stopped, the brewery will continue packaging and distributing its remaining beer until the end of July. The company's taproom, Anchor's Public Taps, will remain open temporarily to sell off remaining inventory, including a small batch of the 2023 Anchor Christmas Ale.
