Hillsboro Drops Regular Season FB Decision To East Clinton

Unique circumstances have become the norm for 2020. So, how about restarting the regular season AFTER a play-off game?

That's exactly what happened when Hillsboro's Indians hosted traditional foe East Clinton Friday night. Both teams were smarting from play-off defeats last week....however, that did not deter either squad from going all out to secure another win.

Hillsboro, on the first possession of the game, went 80 yards for a touchdown. Christopher Stout connected with Canaan Griffith on a 41 yard strike for six points and Nick Turner added the extra point to give HHS the early lead. However, as things turned out, those were the only points that Hillsboro would be able to score all night.

The Astros, shut out in the first stanza, turned the game around in the second quarter when they blocked a Hillsboro field goal attempt and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. The Indians blocked the extra point kick and still led 7-6. That remained the score until only 57 seconds remained in the period.

That was when Jared Smith, the WSRW "player of the game," found Branson Smith open on a 39 yard pass play that put East Clinton on top for good at 12-7 at the intermission.

Momentum on both sides of the ball was clearly in favor of the visitors from Clinton County in the second half. Hillsboro, unable to get their offense in gear in the second half, gave up another touchdown to the Astros in the third quarter when Jared Smith broke away from the 5 yard line for another score to put ECHS up 20-7.

To complete the scoring, freshman Glenn Peacock scampered 24 yards to the end zone and Jared Smith completed the 2 point conversion with a looping pass to Jaden Singleton to make the final score : 28-7.

The Indians will look forward to getting back on track (and picking up their second win of the season) when the Clermont Northeastern Rockets will pay a visit to Richards Memorial Field next Friday.
