Chillicothe Holds On for 23-21 Win Over Logan

The Chillicothe Cavaliers pulled out a roller coaster win on Senior Night, preserving the win by stopping a final Logan drive on the Cavalier 11 yard line in the final minute.

Chillicothe started strong with a 70 yard drive and a Hunter Thomas two yard touchdown to lead 7-0 with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter.

Logan answered in the second quarter, breaking two long plays. Traten Poling finished a 75 yard drive with an 8 yard touchdown run. The Chieftains came right back with an interception and then Quarterback Brayden Sturgell rambled 51 yards for Logan’s second score in three minutes.

Sturgell hit Poling with a pass for a 2 point conversion and a 15-7 Chieftain lead.

The Cavaliers responded big time by finishing a drive when Mason Doughty went in from 1 yard out. Hunter Thomas bulldozed in for the EP conversion and a 15-15 halftime tie.

After a scoreless third and a big Jaiden Cain interception for the Cavs, the home team retook the lead.

Doughty found Doss on a quick pass that saw Doss break away for a 25 yard touchdown pass. One of the big plays of the night came on the extra point kick. The snap was high and Doughty grabbed it and took off. He rolled right and found Isaac McCory in the back of the end zone for what turned out to be the winning margin.

The roller coaster continued when Logan scored in three plays. A short pass to Patton turned into a 71 yard score when Patton broke a tackle and raced to the end zone. The pass for two points and a tie was broken up and the Cavs held a 23-21 lead.

The Chieftains got the ball back at their 19 with 4 minutes remaining and managed to drive to the Cavs 20. On fourth down, Sturgell completed a pass, but it was short by a yard and the Cavs had held on.

Logan out gained Chillicothe 370 to 220 yards. Sturgell led Logan throwing for 116 yards and a score and rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Max Lee rushed for 87 and Doughty threw 5 of 13 for 80 yards and added a touchdown pass and run.

Chillicothe is now 2-2 and begins defense of the FAC at Miami Trace next Friday.
