Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy visited the Chillicothe area again. Our Kevin Coleman asked her a few questions.
Kennedy explained that the court is closing up an election year, not knowing what its composition will be when oral arguments start in 2023. (The state justices are elected, unlike the U.S Supreme Court justices who are appointed for life.)
Kennedy said one of the major cases the court decided this year was DuBose versus McGuffey. The majority ruled that the criteria for bail is only whether the accused can achieve the bond amount, and whether they will come back - but not public safety.
She said she gave one of the three dissenting opinions, which is now in the form of a proposed Ohio Constitutional amendment from a joint resolution from the Ohio General Assembly. Issue 1 is up for ratification in the November 8th election.
Kennedy says polling shows a solid majority will vote yes. The case can be found online by searching for "2022-ohio-8."
Kennedy was attending a Ross County Republican fundraising event, as she is running to be elected Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. Hear the complete interview below.
